What credit score do I need for an auto loan?

There is no set credit score requirement for auto loan approval. However, higher credit scores are generally viewed more favorably and can result in lower interest rates.

Other factors are also considered when you apply for an auto loan, including but not limited to your income, payment history, and debt-to-income ratio.

You aren't required to be preapproved before finding a vehicle. Give us a call at 844-487-8478 (844-4TRUIST) or visit a branch, and our teammates can help you with the steps toward buying a car.

Applying for an auto loan is easy. To apply, you’ll need income and employment information, driver’s license, and verification of the personal information you’ve provided (such as your address). To refinance, you’ll also need a copy of your current registration. For purchases, provide a copy of the bill of sale or buyer’s order.

Secured auto loans are available at eligible dealerships nationwide, and in branches in the following states: AL, AR, DC, FL, GA, IN, KY, MD, MS, NJ, NC, OH, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WV. You can apply for a secured auto loan in person or, if you have a Truist account, apply by phone.

Unsecured auto loans are available nationwide. You can apply for an unsecured auto loan online.

Depending on your credit history, you may want to consider a cosigner or joint applicant. After completing your application, a Truist teammate will help you understand if a cosigner or joint applicant will be needed.

There are no pre-payment penalties for paying off your loan early. There are many factors you’ll need to consider when deciding if paying off your loan early is the right move. This article provides more details on paying off debt vs. investing.

Refinancing your car loan can be a great way to take advantage of lower interest rates and decrease your monthly payments.

Depending on your location, we offer two different options for auto refinance: the Truist secured auto refinance loan and the LightStream unsecured auto refinance loan.

Some things to know about each:

  • If you have an existing Truist secured auto loan, you’ll need to make 6 contractual payments before you can refinance.
  • LightStream unsecured auto refinance loan proceeds cannot be used to refinance an existing LightStream loan or be used for cash out refinance purposes.

Keep in mind that the vehicle title must be in your name, and you’ll need a copy of your current registration before you can refinance your existing loan. A Truist teammate can help you explore the best option for your situation.

Payments for a Truist secured auto loan can be accepted by mail, phone, through your online or mobile banking, or in a branch.

  3. Select Account details in the top right corner to view your loan balance (payoff amount) as of today
  4. Select the Make payment button and follow the prompts

Payments for a LightStream unsecured auto loan can be accepted through AutoPay or online and mobile banking.

Details can be found in your monthly statement, through your online or mobile banking, by calling 844-4TRUIST (844-487-8478), or by visiting a branch.

It may be possible to refinance an auto loan if you owe more than your car’s value (also known as being “underwater” or having negative equity), but approval depends on several factors. Most lenders, including Truist, have limits on how much negative equity they’re willing to refinance. You may need to make a down payment to cover the difference or roll the extra amount into the new loan, which could result in higher payments. A Truist teammate can review your refinancing options and help you determine the best path forward.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Your January 2026 statement will include the total amount of interest you paid in 2025.
  • If you originated and paid off your vehicle loan during 2025, we’ll send you a letter by January 31, 2026, confirming the total amount of interest you paid.
  • To find out if you qualify for the vehicle loan interest deduction, contact your tax advisor or visit www.irs.gov for eligibility details.
